This is a truly great book about a human catastrophe that may well be the worst in all of recorded history. Frank Dikotter, who is one of the most highly respected experts on the modern history of China, estimates that approx 45 million Chinese died between 1959-1962 because Mao decided to radically/insanely increase the pace of industrialization in China regardless of the horrific cost of lives that were lost due to starvation, disease, and repression.
