Description

The main character of the novel is Tevye, a poor milkman from the Jewish village of Boyberik. Tevye is constantly looking for opportunities to earn money. However, he realizes he is a poor man. He doesn’t blame himself for his poverty at all. He always explains to himself the fate that it is God’s will and he must accept it with humility.Tevye and his wife Golde have seven daughters. He wants to marry them one after another. A daughter named Tzeitel wants to marry a poor tailor, even though the richest Jew in the village is courting her. Hodel loves a young Jew with revolutionary views. Chava wants to marry someone who is not Jewish. Shprintze is in love with a wealthy Jew whose family does not agree for this marriage. Only Beilke marries the rich Jew, according to her father’s will. Political situation overlaps with family problems. The Russians interfere in the affairs of Jews and—as a result—the inhabitants of the village are displaced.Sholem Aleichem—a Jewish writer, one of the classics of fiction in Yiddish. He left behind a legacy of forty volumes. Many books have been translated into all the major languages of the world. His work includes novels, short story collections, dramas, comedies, short stories, humoresques and children’s books. The most famous book is Tevye the Milkman (Yiddish: Tevye der milkhiker). The famous musical Fiddler on the Roof was based on it. Humor, irony, sarcasm, but also understanding of human nature and knowledge of human fate—these are the features of style that made the writer popular.
