Description

The book introduces the reader to the variety of fishes strictly found in the freshwater habitats of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 289 native species are presented making it the most comprehensive account of freshwater fishes of Peninsular Malaysia to date. This book provides keys, descriptions and illustrations for identifying them and information on their distribution throughout Peninsular Malaysia. Simple morphological features, taxonomical terms, current taxonomical classification and nomenclature are presented. The non-technical approach of the book, but with an accurate and reasonably complete treatment of the subject, facilitates readers with varied background and interests. Special terms have been kept to a minimum. Those which seem essential for clarity or conciseness are defined where first used. The information on each species follows a uniform arrangement - scientific name, original description, recommended Malay name, diagnosis and habitat. It is hoped that this book will stimulate further studies to uncover new facts about the freshwater fishes of Peninsular Malaysia in particular, and Malaysia and the surrounding region in general.
