The Nivkhes are a small ethnos of the Amur estuary and Sakhalin areas in the Russian Far East. The author points to the Nikhves' separate linguistic and cultural status among their neighbors, while comparing their religious views to those of the Nanaitsy, Oroki, Negidal'tsy, etc. This book analyzes the cult of elements, numerous mythologemes, and beliefs within the context of two-, three-, and multicomponent systems of the Nikhves' world view. The monograph uses the approaches first introduced by Levi-Brule, Levi-Strauss, and Eliade, and is based on the study of research literature, cult and ritual objects, and on the author's field trips.
