Description

English summary: New York is the capital of photography. Already before 1900 the rapidly developing skyline and the dynamism of the metropolis encouraged the pioneers of the new medium. They photographed skyscrapers, the ports, trains stations and developed photography for art. Alfred Stieglitz, the avant-garde photographer and art promoter, presented them for the first time with more modern painters. In its environment developed the pictoralism of an impressionistic concept of imagery into the two directions of American photography: street photography and photographic abstraction. Lewis Hine held the fate of immigrants and children firmly with a sociological and documentary view. For Man Ray, who had started out as a painter, photography became the preferential medium his surreal depictions of the world. Berenice Abbott and Weegee portrayed the life of people in New York- pictures of the moment from the pulsating metropolis. The catalog for the exhibition presents 170 works from 40 photographers and five essays on new research into American photography in the first half of the 20th century.
