Description

This book is intended as a student Guide to the IB Language A Literature programme from the start of the course, as well as a Revision Guide. This is because 55% of the course is completed before the final exams; and because the programme is based on skills that need to be built from the outset. These are identified in Chapter One. The key to success in this programme is acquiring competence in these skills, thus a major focus of the book is demonstrating how to do this.
Chapters Two and Three address the two skills that students consistently identify as their biggest challenges: how to read literary texts appropriately; and how to write effectively about them. These skills underlie the entire programme, and reference to them is made throughout the book.
Chapters Four to Eight respectively explain in detail the five assessed components in the course and the challenges particular to each. They discuss and interpret the assessment criteria; give guidance on how to build the essential skills for success; and provide student exemplars with plans, comments, and evaluations.
Each chapter identifies the main areas of weakness that student work has shown on that component in the past, and advises on how to avoid these. Each chapter also demonstrates how skills developed for one component relate to those needed for other components, and cross-references the relevant sections. Throughout the chapters, "Reflection" and "Study and Revision Activity" boxes invite readers to apply what they have learned from each section to their own texts and needs.
