This collaborative anthology was the work of a number of writers who had gathered round John and Ellen O'Leary and who contributed to The Gael, of which O'Leary was literary editor. It was a self-consciously aware attempt by Yeats' generation to establish a national importance by assuming the mantle of the Young Irelanders of the 1840s. Its publication has been claimed to mark the beginning of the Irish Literary Revival.
