Description

This new study of the Coalport factory and its porcelains provides the most comprehensive view yet published of John Rose and Company throughout the various periods of its eventful history. It starts with its creation, springing from the development of the Industrial Revolution in East Shropshire, and traces its progress through the early difficulties and rivalries to its recognition as one of the country's major porcelain manufacturers. There is a proper balance between the periods and due consideration is given to the post-1880 period following detailed examination of the later pattern books.
The history of the Company is supported by a careful consideration of the porcelains themselves, drawing upon the evidence of the surviving pattern books and extensive source material, both published and original. Almost four hundred illustrations have been chosen to assist in a further understanding of the styles and shapes used at Coalport and the photographs (mainly profiles) have been taken from angles which will aid the identification of Coalport porcelains. Important pieces are identified and illustrated for the first time, such as pieces from the first recorded dessert service to have been produced at Coalport.
