Description

Ulysses S. Grant was an American soldier and politician, he is best known for leading the Union to victory during the American Civil War. Grant graduated from West Point in 1843 and entered into service during the Mexican-American War. Serving with distinction during the Mexican-American War, Ulysses S. Grant remained in the service until 1854 when he failed to secure an important government position after accusations of drunkenness.
When hostilities broke out between North and South, Ulysses S. Grant was reinstated into service and emerged as one of the finest general of the Civil War. His success in leading Union troops to victory during the Civil War brought him many accolades including a promotion to Lieutenant General which was unprecedented at the time. In 1868, Ulysses S. Grant was elected as the eighteenth president of the United States, a position he held from 1869 to 1877. Following his presidency, Grant retired from public life and died in 1885, leaving behind an indelible mark on both military history and US politics.
Grant's Memoirs are an important primary source for the American Civil War and the Reconstruction Era. He was the highest ranking general on either side of the conflict to write their memoirs. Grant's administration oversaw the rapid expansion of the United States into the western territories and the completion of the first transcontinental railroad linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
