Description

In September 1857, the Baker-Fancher emigrant wagon train was travelling on their way to California.
They would never make it further than Mountain Meadows in southern Utah.
The Nauvoo legion, composed of southern Utah’s Mormon settlers, attacked the emigrants with guns and bowie knives with the intention of leaving no witnesses and thus prevent reprisals.
Of the one hundred and twenty emigrants only seventeen children under seven were left alive.
Why did this abhorrent massacre occur?
And who organized and instigated this atrocity?
John D. Lee was a prominent early member of the Latter Day Saint Movement in Utah was sentenced to death for his complicity in the Mountain Meadows massacre.
Yet, before he was executed, he recorded the story of his life, including the awful events of September 1857, in his book Mormonism Unveiled; Life and Confessions of John D. Lee.
This book covers the earliest days of Mormonism and how the religion developed under the leadership of Brigham Young and is essential reading for anyone interested in nineteenth century America.
