Semeia 53: The Fourth Gospel from a Literary Perspective

From 1974 to 2002, the Society of Biblical Literature published "an experimental journal for biblical criticism", a scholarly collection of papers and monographs on selected topics. This edition, the 53rd from 1991, focuses on the gospel of John, the fourth and perhaps most singular gospel standing apart from its synoptic brethren. Included are monographs on plot & character in the fourth gospel, a literary case study of John 10:1-18, the narrative rhetoric of John 11 as the narration of faith, the Johannine "hypodeigma" (John 13:1-38), narrative time in John 13-17, and a look at the "final farewell" of Jesus (John 20:30-21:25). Also included are response papers from other scholars.
