Semeia 64: The Rhetoric of Pronouncement

From 1974 to 2002, the Society of Biblical Literature published "an experimental journal for biblical criticism", a scholarly collection of papers and monographs on selected topics. This edition, the 64th from 1993, focuses on the rhetoric of pronouncement. Included are papers on "Paradigms in Homer, Pindar, the Tragedians, and the New Testament", Lucian's Demonax and cynic rhetoric, rhetorical argumentation in early rabbinic pronouncement stories, rhetorical argumentation in the Hadith literature of Islam, biblical sources for pronouncement stories in the Gospels, conflict and rhetoric in Mark 2:23-28, rhetorical aspects of Mark 7:1-23, a socio-rhetorical analysis of Simon of Cyrene, the story of Zakia's as rhetoric, hospitality and characterization in Luke 11:37-54, and pronouncement stories within social-systemic perspective. Also included are responses to these papers from other scholars.
