Description

Healthful, comfortable living required the availability of an adequate supply of good quality water for drinking and domestic purposes. Whenever possible, the consumer should obtain his water from a public water system in order to enjoy the advantages of qualified supervision under the control of a responsible public agency. It is not always possible, or economically feasible, to obtain water from a community water system, and the consumer is then faced with the need to choose an alternative supply. It is to the individual or institution faced with this need that this manual is primarily directed. Since a considerable portion of the manual deals with ground water and wells – over 90 percent of individual systems – a special committee was organized to assemble this manual with persons who have had extensive practical experience in water well construction. Changing times and changing living habits have imposed greater and greater pollution loads on our environment. It is imperative that all water systems be constructed in accordance with recommended practices known to provide effective defenses against contamination.
