The Political Economy of Regionalism in Southern Africa

Lee (African studies, Georgetown U.) describes the development of the various regional institutions of Southern Africa and assesses their impact on the region. A large part of the work concentrates on the origins and operations of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). She looks at political and economic complications facing regionalism within the context of the world economy. The roles of the World Trade Organization and the European Union (SADC's largest trading partner) are explored. In a final chapter she calls for less of an insistence on market integration and more attention to national development strategies. Co-published with the University of Cape Town.
