History Series

First Edition 2017

This is the story of the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War. It is not a history of the Civil War and seeks only to tell the story of one Regiment that was part of the Army of the Potomac, from the time it was raised in the summer of 1862, to the end of the war.

The story is told by the spirit of the author’s great-great-grandfather, Simeon Bathurst, who was a member of this unit from its inception in the summer of 1862 until the end of the war. For his narrative, Kohler uses primary resources originally owned by Simeon Bathurst which he inherited from family members. These include a history of the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteers published at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as a series of volumes entitled Battles and Leaders of the Civil War which was published in the 1880s.

This book gives the reader a view of the Civil War as seen through the eyes of the men who served in the 148th, as well as some of the leaders who led them. Much of what is contained in this book has not been widely available to the general public prior to this time.
