Description

Sex and Violence in the Media is a unique anthology that examines the effects of sex and violence in a variety of mediated environments. The scholarly articles within this volume bring together the work of noted researchers in the field of mass communication who examine the sexual and violent content of television, film, music, video games, and advertising.  This anthology begins with a reading that introduces the concept of media literacy, followed by an examination of how sexual and violent content can impact audience members emotionally, particularly children. Additional topics include public perception of homosexual imagery in advertising, media violence and public policy, the impact of music videos on teen sexual attitudes, and the appeal and impact of mediated sports violence.  The third edition features new readings that examine the constitutionality of applying the FCC’s indecency restriction to cable TV, free speech as it relates to obscenity in media, growing up on a steady diet of television, offensive user behavior in the virtual environments of first-person shooter games, and verbal aggression in professional wrestling.  Sex and Violence in the Media is an ideal resource for courses in mass communication and media studies.James R. Angelini is an associate professor of communication and the director of graduate studies at the University of Delaware. He earned his Ph.D. in the Department of Telecommunications at Indiana University. His research focuses on the cognitive processing of media messages with emphasis on sports and advertising. Dr. Angelini has published several research articles in journals, including Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Sociology of Sport Journal, Sport in Society, Howard Journal of Communication, and Journal of Language and Social Psychology.
