Your fresh mind creates whatever fanciful notions it pleases, inventing its own little world where everything follows the rules it creates. What if, one day, someone from that world came to your window? What if, in a burst of emotion, he asked you to leave with him? To drop everything and embark on whatever journey your heart desires. Would you do it? Or would you turn down a once in a lifetime chance to keep the comfort of the life you know? These should be your mindset as you begin reading Peter and Wendy, a novel by JM Barrie. As your may have thought, this is indeed the tale of none other than Peter Pan and Wendy Darling, staring characters in the well-known Disney movie “Peter Pan” (which was based on the book). Barrie’s book, which was preceded by the Pan’s appearance in two novels and a stage play, has gained surprisingly little recognition as the catalyst for all later adaptions of the story. This includes multiple movies and a set of prequel books, all of which revolve around Peter. For those who don’t know, Peter Pan is, as stated in the novel, the Boy Who Never Grew Up. He is a whimsical young lad, the perfect representation of what it is to be a child; he is arrogant, brave, bossy, and inquisitive in his nature. The only things he want in life are to have fun and never get older. One day, he found himself in the magical world of Neverland, an island located at “the first star to the right, and straight on ‘til morning.” It is quite literally the accumulation of the fantasies of every youth across the world. Here, he learns to fly and creates a band of other children who wish not to become adults, named “The Lost Boys.” They are also joined by a fairy called Tinker Bell. Peter and the Lost Boys fight a crew of pirates led by Peter’s nemesis, the evil Captain James Hook, multiple Indian tribes, and the various creatures and beasts that roam about the forest. This is the land to which Peter flies Wendy Darling and her younger brothers, the night before Wendy is to become a woman. It is here that they embark upon many adventures, surprisingly few of which are described in full detail.
