Sam is a thirteen-year-old boy whose love of animals leads him on adventures greater than he could ever imagine. As summer arrives, Sam and his two best friends, Amanda and Maria, jump at the opportunity to work in the Young Zookeepers Program at the new mysterious ZooExplorium opening in the small town of Buxley. The ZooExplorium is unlike any zoo in the world. Instead of just walking through and seeing the animals, the ZooExplorium offers visitors the opportunity to explore the animal's natural habitat, just like the first naturalists did hundreds of years ago. After earning a spot in the program through a virtual reality competition that tests their courage and determination, Sam and his friends progress through the weekly sessions. However, along the way Sam, and Sam alone, begins to hear a voice calling his name. Searching for this puzzling voice, he and his friends stumble upon hidden doors and secret portals finding danger and intrigue around every corner. When Sam discovers the source of the voice, he and his friends are transported back through time to a series of far-away places where they must figure out how to save a number of species from extinction. Only when his journey ends does Sam find out the true purpose of his adventure and what the future holds.
