Description

Excerpt from The Lancashire Life of Bishop FraserThe Charges of Bishop Fraser, having been separately published, are not reproduced in this volume, though ex tracts from them will be found in various Chapters. Nor has the strict chronological sequence of events been adhered to. In a life like Bishop Fraser's, in which the same topics are again and again dealt with, the chronological method of narrative would have led to much confusion. While, thereyet each Chapter of the Book aims at presenting the separate story of some particular department of the Bishop's work; and the Author can but humbly hope that from the combination of the Chapters a true picture of Bishop Fraser's Lancashire Infe will form itself in the reader's mind - a picture full of light, yet not without shadows. The Author desires to *thank all those who have placed the Bishop's letters to them at his disposal; (2) all those who (like the Venerable Archdeacons Norris, Anson, and Hornby; the Revs. Canon Maclure, James Lonsdale, and H. B. Hawkins; most of all, Mrs. Fraser and Mr. Chancellor Christie) have assisted him with important suggestions, and the revision of large portions of the manu script; (3) his assistant-curate, the Rev. H. P. Cronshaw, by whom the Index has been compiled. The Author has sometimes been inclined to relinquish his task, under the sense of his inability to do anything like justice to the subject of it; but the encouragements of his many correspondents - particularly of Mrs. Fraser - united to his own strong desire to pay his tribute to one for whom he feels an ever-deepening sense of affection, have induced him to persevere; and he now submits the results of his labours to the kindly consideration of those for whose sake it was chiefly undertaken, viz., the people of Lancashire, earnestly trusting that it may help to bring back to their recollection some memories of one who loved to spend himself for their sakes.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
