In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For," we are told, "an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had." (John v. 2-4.)Bethesda signifies, literally, House of Mercy, or of Pity.Even in the days of Jesus, this ancient Bethesda was evidently quite inadequate to the demands made upon it. And in later times its healing virtue seems to have become quite exhausted. Its porches have disappeared: the angel comes no more to trouble its waters.
