This textbook is designed to be a resource for counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, students, and others in the helping professions who want to expand their ability to engage clients in the exploration of emotional pain. The book was also written to equip counselors and therapists with skills to work with people of the countless so-called minority cultures who rely heavily upon a counselor's ability to create an affective relationship that communicates a deep sense of respect, honesty, enthusiasm, and appreciation. Taking a vacation to another country or a course in multi-cultural counseling does not make a therapist an expert in another culture, but when a counselor or helping professional creates an affective therapeutic relationship, communication becomes the deepest form of caring we can create in our lifetime.
