The Thesaurus is a guide to the index terms used in the GeoRef (Geological References) database and helps users of GeoRef to improve the efficiency and accuracy of their searches. The present edition (5th was 1989) contains some 23,000 terms (of which about 3,000 are new), includes new and revised hierarchies of terms, adds country names to cities, and contains new lists of rock units and meteorites. Each valid term is dated by year added to the Thesaurus , and many systematic terms have been added based on their occurrence in the geoscience literature since 1987.
