Description

Published to coincide with an exhibition of the Getty Museum's LeGray and Watkins photographs at the Stadel Art Institute in Frankfurt, this book presents thirty-two full-page duotone illustrations of early masterpieces of landscape photography. LeGray's seascapes and other works from the mid-nineteenth century are complemented by Watkin's views of the American West. In addition to the catalog entries, biographies, and bibliography, there are essays by the authors on "LeGray, Watkins, and the Esthetic of Perception," "Between the Barbizon School and the Beginnings of Impressionism," and "American Landscape: Geology and the Sacred, Commerce and Manifest Destiny."
