The author presents a unique first-hand account of the daily life of the maquis--the leaders, cadres, guerilla fighters, and peasants who at various levels constitute the movement--and of the political, military, and cultural organizations and work of the PAIGC. He has also given us an important anthropological document, a detailed analysis of a country of some 800,000 people of complex ethnic and tribal composition, and of varying religions, from Muslim to Animist.
