Description

This is one of a trio of books ("The Saddle", "Bitting" and "Training Aids") which combine to form a practical manual covering the origin, action, use and recommended fitting of a very wide range of items within the three areas. Written in a clear, readable style and well-illustrated throughout, the books should be of interest to all horse-owners and riders and of value to examination candidates, providing as it does a sound understanding of the subject. This guide to training aids offers a constructive study of the equipment employed in training which includes some of the less usual items and some which are considered controversial. The author, amongst the most authoritative of equestrian writers, argues for their inclusion on the grounds that since such equipment is made and used horse-owners should understand the action and purpose and the way in which the items are employed and fitted. On that basis the advantages and disadvantages of a particular piece of equipment can be properly assessed. Patterns of lungeing and schooling tackle are described and the use of various types of reins is discussed, all being considered within a progressive system of training. There is an explanation of the use of running and draw reins and of the difference between the two, and a section devoted to training systems based on the Chambon and de Gogue martingales. Also included are the Market Harborough and the very much more controversial balancing rein.
