I read this book decades ago and have now bought it and am rereading it. I love it, but it's not for everybody. It's in two volumes, one on the movement-image (broadly, early films) and the time-image (broadly, film from the 1950s through the 80s, when the auther wrote it). The author is a professional philosopher. He argues that the mode of film as communication and expression has entirely new modes of thought to offer, that aren't present in the arts that came earlier.
