Description

In this second volume, containing chapters seven through eleven, Mawby (history, U. of Manchester, England) covers the period from 1904 to the General Election of 1907. He addresses the pressures that developed in 1904 for self-government, due to declining levels of satisfaction amongst Rand Britons with the Crown Colony system of government. He then discusses party formation in Johannesburg during 1905, the changes of government and the Constitutional somersault of early 1906, and the anti-capitalism and the renewal of the Chinese labor debate late in 1906, ending with the denouement: the General Election of 1907. In his conclusion, the author summarizes the forces which led the Rand Britons to mobilize politically. Includes a glossary and extensive bibliographies. Annotation c.
