Description

Mawby (history, U. of Manchester), who was born in South Africa and received part of his schooling at the U. of Pretoria- Witwatersrand, helps readers comprehend how Afrikaner- dominated apartheid politics came to prevail for nearly a century until 1990 by tracing the convoluted process leading to the 1899 Anglo-Boer War; the brief triumph of British imperial power (represented by Lord Milner) over the Boer republics; and the establishment of a unified "Old South Africa." In this context, the author analyzes the role of the Witwatersrand-based gold-mining industry on the early interventionist policies influenced by British "Uitlanders" (foreigners) attracted to the mines. Three editorial cartoons on these issues and the table of contents for v.2 are included. The volume lacks an index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
