This book provides an historical and contemporary overview of the concept of transference in psychotherapy. The traditional view of transference is contrasted with the more modern relational view. The "old" model views transference as a displacement of feelings and thoughts from the important people of childhood to a relatively neutral, anonymous and abstinent therapist.
