Small, Untroubled World: Gustave Baumann 2020 Wall Calendar
Book details
Summary
Description
"Complex and exacting to produce, sometimes involving seven blocks for a single composition over the course of months, the woodblock prints of Gustave Baumann (American, b. Germany, 1881-1971) betray none of the effort that went into their making. They are self-contained small worlds that speak to the heart of simplicity. Baumann began his artistic endeavors in rural Indiana, moved to the Northeast, and eventually settled in New Mexico, where he would spend the rest of his life. In each locale, he captured the spirit of his surroundings with affectionate respect. Immersing himself in the Santa Fe art colony, he developed printing techniques that grace his works with a luminous quality, suiting the region's broad skies and relentless sun. Baumann's rich desert landscapes, golden aspen leaves, and flowers in bloom reflect the beauty he saw in everyday life. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. FSC certification promotes responsible forest management by ensuring that forestry practices are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable. FSC license code FSC N001864."
