Description

"The production of the first Morris motor car in 1913 introduced a marque into British motoring history which was to survive until 1983. Within a short period William Morris had utilized the car chassis as a basis for a small van - the first Morris Commercial." "Facilities to manufacture larger commercials became available in 1923, and the formation of Morris Commercial Cars Limited in 1924 opened up a new market. In the following years many variations of Morris Commercials were introduced, and by the outbreak of the Second World War the company had produced heavy lorries, tractor units, single- and double-decker buses, taxis, ambulances, and most of the motorized vehicles for the British Army. The outbreak of hostilities saw Morris Commercial production switched to the manufacture of such items as tanks, bren-gun carriers and military vehicles." "The amalgamation of Morris with its major rival, Austin, in 1952, to form the British Motor Corporation heralded an inevitable move towards rationalization, and in 1968 the 'Morris' name on the Commercials finally disappeared in favour of the 'BMC' badge." "Here for the first time is a unique collection of over 150 photographs tracing the proud and fascinating history of Morris Commercials. Each remarkable illustration recaptures the attention to individual requirements and lack of uniformity in design so marvellously evocative of the period. This is complemented by the text which provides both absorbing detail for the enthusiast and interesting facts for the general reader."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
