California Condors (Returning Wildlife)

Stories of animal species threatened with extinction abound. The "Returning Wildlife series examines this topic from another perspective: species that have come back from the brink of extinction through the efforts of many different people and programs. Vivid writing and numerous examples enliven the stories told in these books. California condor populations began to decline when Europeans arrived on the Pacific coast in the seventeenth century. By the 1980s the surviving handful of condors were removed from the wild and bred in captivity. Since 1992, captive-bred condors have been successfully reintroduced into the wild in California, Arizona, and Mexico.
