Description
Begins by discussing the lives and characters of both protagonists and shows how st. Bernard became the center of the opposition to Abelard. He then studies the contemporary political situation before relating the circumstances which brought them into open conflict at the Council of Sens in 1140. The second part of the book is devoted to the theological issue between them and to a close critical examination of the sources, first the Captiual Haeresum P. Abaelardi, then Bernard's own indictment as found in his letter to the Pop, and finally Abelard's position, from his writings.
