Description

Damon is the story of a sixteen year old orphan who falsifies his birth certificate and joins the US Navy during World WarII. His adventures lead to romance in California and action in the South Pacific. He participates in the invasion of the Japanese occupied islands of Tarawa, Saipan and Guam. He is later transferred to an aircraft carrier that is sunk by a Japanese kamikase attack at the battle of the Leyte Gulf. He falls in love with beautiful Melanie Wells while recuperating from wounds, only to be transferred to the newly commissioned battleship, USS Missouri. The Missouri is chosen to host the Japanese unconditional surrender in Tokyo Bay where Damon witnesses Admiral Chester Nimitz and General Douglas MacArthur conduct the signing ceremony. On the return voyage to the United States, Damon learns he is to be awarded the Navy Congressional Medal of Honor by President Truman at the White House for heroism during the battle of the Leyte Gulf. Damon is nominated to attend the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. Upon graduation he and Melanie are married. He retires as a rear admiral after forty-six years of honorable service.
