Description

This is the student's book for "Etoiles 3". The text covers core material for all levels of ability with clear grammatical explanations. The differentiated activities include fictional and non-fictional items. "Etoiles 3" (Year 9) is a consolidation and review stage. As with stages 1 and 2 it presents interactive material, but there are additional dimensions. Whereas "Etoiles" 1 and 2 focus on content (performance "in" and "through" French rather than knowledge "about" French), "Etoiles 3" examines form (language analysis) and process (language acquisition) as well. It recycles and expands earlier topics drawing together the strands of grammar in familiar phrases and helping learners see the formal structures. "Etoiles 3" also develops the automomous learning process started in stages 1 and 2. The 12 units of "Etoiles 3" visit each of the first six Areas of Experience of the National Curriculum twice each. The seventh Area of Experience, Creativity, is treated as a dimension of the course, and is supported in all units. The assessment provision of "Etoiles 3" meets the requirements of Key Stage 3 National Tests insofar as they are known at the time of going to press, and give additional guidance on Levels of Attainment. "Etoiles 3" is linked to the BBC television series, "Le Cafe de Reves". This is a five-part drama filmed on location in Lille, featuring a group of city teenagers in a suspense story. The language level is pitched to present real, everyday French for 13-14 year olds. Together, "Etoiles" 1-3 offer a flexible branching programme so that classes can proceed at their own level and pace as the ability gap widens through Key Stage 3. Stage 1 is a foundation stage for all ages 11-12+ across the ability range. Stage 2 is for classes which are ready to move on during Year 8. Its topics can be explored in as much depth as suits the class. Stage 3 is suitable for all learners, whether or not they have completed Stages 1 and 2. It contains material for the complete ability range, with thorough revision for those who need it. It provides a year's work for some classes; for others it will provide a reminder for National Test purposes, and a summing-up of their progress so far. Teachers and learners can take from it what they individually need.
