Contrasts (Longman Advanced Skills)

This is a reading skills book for upper intermediate and advanced students of English language and literature. Each unit focuses on two or more contrasting texts on the same theme, giving students the opportunity to look systematically at important aspects of content and style in order to develope a better understanding of the features of written English. The book contains a range of topics from a variety of written sources and has a full introduction giving the rationale behind the material. It aims to be a structured examination of written style, including the ways writers can reveal their personality, the use of propaganda, different levels of formality and intimacy and the use of illustration. Also included are tasks to aid comprehension and develop the ability to analyze and contrast extracts in English as well as a key with suggested answers.
