Description

Chicago philanthropists Lindy and Edwin Bergman own one of the most famous collections of Surrealist art. Now housed in The Art Institute of Chicago, the collection encompasses over 100 works in a wide range of media, from drawings and paintings to sculpture. The 32 artists represented in the collection and featured in this text include Jean Arp, Andre Breton, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dali, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Wifredo Lam, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro, Francis Picabia and Yves Tanguy. A highlight of the collection is a group of 38 boxes and collages by Joseph Cornell, the most representative grouping of the artist's work. Critic and art historian Ades provides an account of the collection since its inception. Each work is reproduced and accompanied by information on provenance and exhibition history, as well as commentary.
