This magnificent portrait gallery documents the men who took command during the dark and bloody days of the nation's greatest internal calamity. Two dozen photographs, the work of famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady and his contemporaries, depict a roster of celebrated Union and Confederate leaders, including Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Ulysses S. Grant. Also depicted are Confederate officers James Longstreet, J. E. B. Stuart, "Stonewall" Jackson, and Nathan Bedford Forrest, along with their Union adversaries: William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, George Brinton McClellan, George Gordon Meade, and many others.
