"Mesmerizing…Underland is a portal of light in dark times." ―Terry Tempest Williams, New York Times Book Review
In Underland, Robert Macfarlane delivers an epic exploration of the Earth’s underworlds as they exist in myth, literature, memory, and the land itself. Traveling through the dizzying expanse of geologic time―from prehistoric art in Norwegian sea caves, to the blue depths of the Greenland ice cap, to a deep-sunk "hiding place" where nuclear waste will be stored for 100,000 years to come―Underland takes us on an extraordinary journey into our relationship with darkness, burial, and what lies beneath the surface of both place and mind.
Global in its geography and written with great lyricism, Underland speaks powerfully to our present moment. At once ancient and urgent, this is a book that will change the way you see the world. 24 illustrations

This is one of the most poetically written, non-fiction books I have ever read. The author knows all the correct terms for the landscape and comes across extremely intelligent. I got this book for the chapters concerning Greenland. After I devoured those two chapters, I wanted the whole book to be about the Arctic. It also makes me want to read everything he has ever written. The book will definitely not disappoint and you may have a new favorite author after a reading only a couple of chapters.

Macfarlane has a wonderful writing voice. He is very erudite. He brings in so much information from many different angles. If you are interested in landscapes and lifeways, it is a great read.

It is well organized. He brings in and returns to perspectives.

Nothing. If you don't like his style you probably wouldn't like the book.
