About the Author
Michael Mark is emeritus professor of music at Towson University, where he also served as dean of the graduate school. Prior to that, he was head of the music education program at The Catholic University of America. Earlier, he was a music teacher in Prince George's County, Maryland, supervisor of music for the public schools of Auburn and Elmira, New York, and assistant professor at Morgan State University in Baltimore. Dr. Mark is a member of the Music Educators Hall of Fame of the National Association for Music Education and the Hall of Fame of the Maryland Music Educators Association. He is a past president of the Maryland Music Educators Association and has served on several National Association for Music Education (NAfME) committees, including two terms on the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Research in Music Education. He is former chair of the Board of Governors of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance Alumni Society, and he holds degrees from The George Washington University, The University of Michigan, and The Catholic University of America. A Fulbright scholar, he has been recognized by Catholic University with its Alumni Achievement Award. Dr. Mark is the author of approximately 75 juried articles and several books: Source Readings in Music Education History (Routledge, 3rd Edition, 2008), A History of American Music Education (with Charles Gary, Rowman and Littlefield Education 2007, 3rd Edition), A Concise History of American Music Education (Rowman and Littlefield Education, 2008), Music Education in Your Hands (with Patrice Madura, Routledge, 2009), and But Not Next Door (Baltimore Neighborhoods, Inc., 1999).
Patrice Madura Ward-Steinman is professor of music education at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. A specialist in choral music education, vocal jazz, and vocal music research, she is a former professor and music education department chair at the University of Southern California, and a former faculty member and conductor of choral ensembles at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne. She also has taught choral and general music for grades K-12 and has performed extensively as a pianist. Professor Madura is the author of four other books: Becoming a Choral Music Teacher (Routledge, 2009), Music Education in Your Hands (With Michael L. Mark, Routledge, 2009), Images of America: Madura's Danceland (Arcadia, 2010) and Getting Started With Vocal Improvisation (MENC, 1999). She has published articles in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education, Journal of Historical Research in Music Education, Philosophy of Music Education Review, Psychology of Music, International Journal of Music Education, and Teaching Music. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Research in Music Education.
