This is the catalog of an exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York from October 30, 1989 to January 21, 1990. It contains 127 plates of Canaletto's artwork, almost all in color, as well as an appendix that contains 5 documents in the artist's handwriting. Also included is an essay by the foremost expert on Canaletto, J. G. Links, who helped organize this exhibition, entitled "Canaletto: A Biographical Sketch". Four other essays, "Canaletto as Artist of the Urban Scene" by Michael Levey; "The Taste for Canaletto" by Francis Haskell; "Fantasy and Reality in Canaletto's Drawings" by Alessandro Bettagno; and, "The Development of Canaletto's Painting Technique" by Viola Pemberton-Pigott, all add insight into this great master and his art.
