Culture and Psychopathology

This volume gathers a well selected collection of readings which illustrate the interrelationships between psychopathology and sociocultural variables. An extensive set of annotated references complement the analysis introduced by the basic readings to such topics as deviant behavior, diagnosis, and psychiatric care within a cross-cultural context. CULTURE AND PSYCHOPATHOLOGY is organized into three major sections: conceptual and methodological issues within the field; personality development, sociocultural structures and change, general psychopathology and diagnosis, specific psychiatric disorders and psychiatric care, all within a cross-cultural perspective; evaluates how psychiatry as a social institution is shaped by the sociocultural and the political-economic system in which it exists.
