Description

The primary objective of this book is to provide the reader with an understanding of the basic principles involved in the design and operation of existing suppression and detection systems found in most occupancies. It is not a manual for the design, inspection, or maintenance of these systems. For review and further information, at theend of each chapter are included selected bibliographies, suggested readings, and review questions. This second edition examines the essential data on improvements that have occurred since the original edition appeared in 1974. Chapter 2, concerned with fire extinguishers, Chapter 4, related to foam systems, and Chapter 7, which covers halogenated agent extinguishing systems, have been expanded considerably. The last three chapters have receivedthe greatest input of new material due to the intensive research, development and application advances of detectors and detector systems in the past five years. It seems reasonable to believe that individuals who understand the basic principles and limitations of suppression and detection systems will discover ideas and concepts for the improvement of these systems and, more importantly, will provide ideas for new and unique systems.Water spray systems, standpipe systems, and automatic sprinkler systems are intentionally not considered in this book. This is not intended to be a reflection on the importance, reliability, and achievements of these systems, especially the automatic sprinkler systems. It is believedthat these systems are of such importance that they require detailed and intensive treatment in a separate volume.
