This study asembes and discusses the evidence for the Nestorian Church in the Middle East. Builds on the work of the late J M Fiey, covering a wider geographical area and a much wider range of sources including memoirs of European and American missionaries and other literary sources, and a large number of manuscript catalogues, many only available in Arabic; analyses evidence from more than 2500 East Syrian manuscript colophons to establish the dioceses of the Church and to identify its ecclesiastical elites, and the rivalry between the Church's traditionalist and Catholic wings afetr the schism of 1552. Contains detailed maps localising hundreds of East Syrian villages in Kurdistan.
