He first began collecting license plates at the age of 10, in which he is still active. This led into collecting oil and gas memorabilia. Tom focuses his collecting mainly on American one quart oil cans. Susan graduated from Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas with a B.A. degree in Graphic Art. The two have combined their abilities to tackle the project of creating this book. Between Tom's collection, knowledge of the cans, and connections with other collectors and Susan's graphic knowledge and computer experience, they felt they could handle the task.
