What if I don't return my rental item before the deadline?

Understanding the BooksRun rental return process and related charges is essential to avoid late fees and unexpected purchases. Our system supplies you with return reminders 14 days before the initial return deadline, and 7 days before the final missed deadline; disregarding them may lead to issues with the returns and future possible charges.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of how it works and how to handle your rental order properly.

If unforeseen circumstances prevent meeting the deadline, you can request a courtesy extension of up to 5 days free of charge by contacting customer support.

1. First Missed Deadline

  • A $15 extension fee will be automatically charged.

  • Your rental period is extended by 15 days.

2. Second Missed Deadline (After Extension)

  • The remaining purchase price of the item will be charged.

  • The book is no longer eligible for return and becomes your property.

Important: Charges typically occur when the book isn't postmarked (scanned by the carrier) by the due date. Always ensure you use the prepaid return label provided by BooksRun to avoid missed tracking updates.

BooksRun requires that the rental be shipped back and scanned by a carrier before the due date. Just dropping it off is not enough.

We do not provide UPS shipping labels for rental returns. Rentals are only supplied with either USPS or FedEx return labels, so bringing the package to UPS service may result in shipping delays or non-delivery of your package.

You may find the exact mail carrier in the label notification email, or in your order details.

Here's how to ensure a valid return:

  • Use the prepaid return label provided.

  • Make sure the carrier scans the package (USPS, FedEx).

  • Get a receipt showing the shipment date as proof.

  • Track your return by checking the “Order Details” in your BooksRun account.

  • Avoid drop boxes unless you are certain of the exact date and time they will be emptied to ensure timely scanning.

  • Use USPS facilities to have the package scanned immediately, creating an electronic record of your shipment.

  • Include your order identifier on the label (e.g., "7062176 return") if you ship with your own label to ensure accurate processing upon arrival.

  • Do not refuse a package; instead, send it back using approved carriers like USPS.

You can check the rental return status in your order details.

To avoid any charges, please make sure to:

  1. Return the rental in the exact same condition it was rented initially.

  2. Check your order timeline to verify deadlines.

  3. Return the rental promptly using the provided return shipping label, do not send the rental order back as a buyback.

  4. Extend the rental by paying a $15 extension fee and returning the book promptly within the extended period.

  5. Purchase the book by paying the purchase price if it’s not returned on time.

Proactive Steps to Resolve Missed Deadlines

If you miss a deadline:

  1. Locate and Use Your Return Label: If you cannot find it, contact customer support to have it resent.

  2. Return Immediately: Ensure tracking information is available by having the package scanned before the extended deadline.

  3. Discuss Extensions: Contact customer support to request a courtesy extension if applicable.

By acting quickly, you can avoid additional charges or resolve issues effectively.

If you hadn't returned a rental item before the deadline, and the purchase price was charged, you can sell the books using our buyback program.
