A Brief History of the College Textbook Pricing Racket

It’s a known fact that for the past decades the price of textbooks has increased at a drastic rate. New editions of textbooks are made every year, rendering the old ones, in most cases, useless, and students have no choice but to purchase them. Thanks to the Internet, students have been able to find a way to cope with the increasing price. A helpful factor is the emergence of websites and bookstores that give students the opportunity to rent books for a given period of time. They can also search through the web for used textbooks or ebooks which come in prices way cheaper than the original new or paper form. Ever wonder why textbooks tend to be unreasonably expensive even for the average college student? Well, you’re not the only one. This is one of the most current problems we college students face. Various surveys have been taken by American universities to estimate how much college students spend on textbooks, and this ranges from $600 to even $1000 depending on which university you attend (private university or community college). Also taking into consideration the expenses for school supplies and material, this could easily top over $1000. Yes, that’s a pretty scary number. So, why do textbooks cost so much? We did some research and here are a few reasons why: Continue reading “Why Do Textbooks Cost So Much?”

Top 6 Textbooks to Buy in July 2017

It’s not such a big secret that publishers keep making new editions of popular textbook titles every single year, but apparently, some books never go out of fashion as they keep holding the top places in our sales rankings. Most of them are required basics in such courses as Anatomy & Physiology, Sociology, Calculus etc. and serve as an introduction into the world of other specialized subjects.

The most popular categories that we were selling in June and July 2017 proved to be Anatomy and Mathematics. Sociology and Biology were slightly behind, but what they were lacking in quantity they gained in speed of how quickly they were sold.

Watch out for Textbooks with Stickers and Tape!

If you or your friends have ever purchased a textbook from a bookstore or online seller, you have most likely encountered a situation when some of them are sold while being completely covered with stickers saying something like “USED BOOK!” But is this really the purpose of these stickers – to loudly inform you that this book is, in fact, used?

Such stickers and black tape (which sometimes covers half of the book) hide not very nice secrets. Underneath, there might be a wide variety of different markings.

1) Different ISBN

The most innocent thing that can happen to a book that has a sticker is that it can have a different ISBN.
For example, a bundle which includes a book and an access code has been sold to a student. The book, obviously, has an ISBN which corresponds to the bundle printed on the cover and is quoted by buyback websites accordingly. However, if the student has used this access code and sold the book back to the college bookstore, this bookstore often puts the sticker which has an ISBN and barcode of a standalone book and sell it again as such.

2) Instructor’s editions

Again and again, every day we receive hundreds of books covered with tape and stickers to such extent that it’s hard to recognize them. Markings saying Instructor’s edition or Teacher’s edition and their ISBNs is the most common thing that is hiding under all this.

3) Complimentary copies

Complimentary copies, examination copies, free copies, uncorrected proofs, not for sale, not for resale – you name it, we’ve seen it. They are not for sale. We cannot accept them. Absolutely. Please make sure to remove stickers and tape from the cover before selling textbooks. Continue reading “Watch out for Textbooks with Stickers and Tape!”

Buyback Condition Guide

Before sending us your books, it is important that you make sure they fit our acceptance criteria and condition guidelines. Please carefully read the description of the item on BooksRun or a publisher’s website when entering the ISBN, including following criteria: type of cover, presence of supplementary materials such as CDs/DVDs, access codes, multiple volumes.

1) Things you need to pay attention to:

  • Loose leaf editions

Loose leaf / a la Carte editions frequently have ISBNs of hardcovers or paperbacks on them, and it often confuses students who are willing to sell them. Correct ISBN of a loose leaf is usually located on the copyright page. Some loose leaf editions are custom made and do not have a separate ISBN and therefore, cannot be accepted for buyback as they cannot be given a quote.

  • Multiple volume sets

If your book has only one ISBN and it corresponds to a set with many volumes, then you need to send us the whole set. We cannot accept only one book from the whole set for buyback if it does not have a separate ISBN and therefore, cannot be quoted.

  • Stickers and tape
