CHURROS Y CHOCOLATE is audio-lingual inasmuch as we cultivate the listening and speaking skills and stress the importance of proper pronunciation. We provide dictations and listening comprehensions exercises, pronunciation drill, and throughout the book offer abundant opportunity for oral practice. Most of the exercises and questionnaires can be handled orally, and in the sections entitled Hablemos un poco, we ask the students to talk about themselves, their interests, feelings, and activities. CHURROS Y CHOCOLATE is cognitive. At each step of the way the student must understand what he or she is doing. There are explanations and generalizations, presented always in simple, clear language directed to the student, who is never asked to work with material that has not been explained. We discourage useless memorization and suggest no mindless repetition. The exercises are designed to lead to a conscious control of the language system. We have at all times striven to make the learning activities meaningful to the student.
