As a young Vietnamese American writer, he writes a letter to his illiterate mother, where he blends his memories and feelings in an attempt to articulate and process them. Why do we think Libras (and pretty much everyone) should give this book a try? Because it’s a powerful exercise in empathy, written in such a language that makes it hard to be characterized or labeled: a memoir, or maybe a coming of age story, or a poem—or all of the above? We recommend practicing it a little at a time, as the subject is not the easiest. But we promise you won’t forget poetic Ocean Vuong’s observations in a hurry.
