Today with the increased pressing to find a job, higher rates of unemployment, competition for best university places due to increased globalization, it is not surprising that more and more students get stressed about their grades. So does college GPA matter? A lot of students think that their GPA results will limit their job prospects. The truth is that for graduates their college GPA is important because very often it is the only thing that demonstrates their intellectual ability as well as measures the number of efforts they have put into their knowledge and education. But what is important to understand is that over time the importance of GPA diminishes and what actually matters is your professional success, the names of the companies you worked for, and the feedback about you as an employee (from your ex-bosses and ex-colleagues). I’m pretty sure that we’re all familiar with the phenomenon called ‘cramming’. It’s a skill that almost every student has come to possess from years and years of getting used to leaving tasks until the last minute. Although it’s known that cramming won’t probably land you an A, it surely might prevent an F (and what more could one possibly ask for?)
Cramming is a last-minute study technique that students have depended on for decades, and although it has proven to have a beneficial outcome for some, it might have its consequences. Cramming is pretty much trying to memorize a large amount of information in a short period of time. We usually do it the night before a test, exam, or during revision week.Continue reading “Does Cramming Really Work?”
We live in the 21st century, at the time when the competition is high and we have a lot of responsibilities expected of us and a lot of tasks to be completed. This is draining and most of the time it feels like it is easier to lie on the bed rather than get up to all this which is awaiting us. Hi there, it’s Tom! I am glad to announce the winner of our scholarship contest. It was difficult to choose out of 127 wonderful essays, but we did it.
We congratulate Carol Tally, the student of the Massasoit Community College for winning the $1000 scholarship. You can read a part of her story below.
Dear BooksRun Scholarship Committee:
Thank you for the opportunity to apply for the BooksRun scholarship.
Returning to college in my mid-fifties started out as an intimidating experience but I realized with resources such as BooksRun, the journey was going to be possible. My college-age children shared their experiences, introduced me to ISBN and navigated around www.booksrun.com with me. This was an amazing introduction and surpassed my experience of standing in a long bookstore line to learn the book just sold out or is selling at a higher than usual mark-up. It is autumn, another academic year has started and for many students out there it will be their final year at university. This means that they will have to find an internship or graduate work and transform gradually into adult life. If it happens to be one of you, dear reader, you know that now is the right time to start thinking about what you are going to do after graduation.
There are different phases of the job-hunting process that include deciding what you want to do in your professional life, asking yourself if you have the experience to match the requirements of the job you are interested in, the actual application process, and the final stage — winning performance at the interview.
Although it might be partly true that getting a job is about being at the right place at the right time, such an extra effort as getting organized about your job hunting approach will serve you well in the years to come. So let’s get started!Continue reading “How to land a graduate job”
